Our population of approximately 580 encompasses students of many diverse backgrounds and cultures in kindergarten through sixth grade. We strive to provide the kind of individual attention that encourages students both academically and socially and makes our large school seem like a smaller, more personal one. Thomas Jefferson's mission is to empower our students to be self-motivated, world-class learners who demonstrate respect, responsibility, and commitment to academic excellence. Our motto is One Terrific Journey, and staff, parents, and community supporters are all dedicated to making each child's journey at Thomas Jefferson truly terrific!
Senate Bill 16 or School Funding Reform Act of 2014
As many of you may have heard by now the Illinois State Legislature has been working on a Bill to redistribute the state funding for every student. This money is funded to each student through the school districts. The name of this bill is School Funding Reform Act of 2014 or State Bill 16 (SB16).
The purpose of this Bill is to help those students in low income areas of the state get more funding to help with their education. There will be no money added to the budget just reallocated to other schools. Our district would lose the money as our property values are assessed higher than areas in the southern part of Illinois. The Bill would reduce the funding each year with a cap of $1000 per student. This means a loss of up to $11 million a year for our district because 80% of our funding comes from the state. This $11 million is 7% of our district budget.
What can you as a parent do about this? While we understand the need for proper funding for all schools there has to be a better way to resolve this issue than taking away funding from other schools. If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or want more information; please contact your local State Senator or Representative or attend either of the following meetings. There two meetings dealing with this issue are; one with our State senator (which is where the bill is pending now), and one with Districts 15, 54, and 211. The first meeting with Senator Matt Murphy and Representatives David Harris and Tom Morrison on Tuesday October 21, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:30. This session takes place at the Metropolis Performing Arts Center 111 W Campbell in Arlington Heights. The district meeting will be Thursday October 30, 2014 at 7pm at Schaumburg High School 1100 W Schaumburg Rd in Schaumburg.
